We invite you to join our Yoga Community in the Northern Illawarra.
We practice and teach a yoga style known as Ashtanga Yoga. This method offers a sequence of postures (called asanas) and breathing exercises (called pranayama). Starting with the Primary Series, students build strength, stamina and flexibility of the body, as well as clearing and calming the mind.
The postures evolve slowly over time and allow students to choose the depth and intensity of their experience. Regular practice creates stability and confidence in your body and cultivates a calm and meditative state of mind.

You will become stable in your legs and confident in the constellation of your limbs in various postures.
Focus on the internal body, breath and posture can bring one into a calm and meditative state of mind.
The postures in the sequence evolve slowly over time and allow students to choose the depth and intensity of their experience.
You will come to know each posture well and be able to practice independently.
Ashtanga is a Sanskrit term meaning eight limbs and refers to the eight-fold path of yoga outlined in the Yoga Sutras, an ancient text attributed to the sage Patanjali. Practicing these eight limbs holistically leads to wellbeing.

Alyson Johnson
Senior Teacher & Mentor - Yoga Australia
Alyson returned home to the South Coast in 2011 and started Thirroul Yoga Shala after living and working in Sydney for 20 years.
She is a long-time student of Eileen Hall and assisted at YogaMoves in Sydney.
Alyson was also mentored by Fiona Pullen at Ashtanga Yoga Space for three years full time before taking on parenthood.
Those apprentice years were spent emersed in the Ashtanga yoga community among experienced and skilled senior teachers and practitioners learning the Mysore style of practice.
Both of her teachers were very strict but incredibly generous with their knowledge and expertise. They layed the foundation for Alyson to share the teachings of Ashtanga yoga in the Illawarra.
